Erick Weakens Slightly; Flossie Now a Tropical Storm: 11AM 7/31 Update

Hurricane Erick has weakened slightly and Hurricane Flossie is now Tropical Storm Flossie...for now.

Hurricane Erick: Erick has weakened slightly from the 5AM report, with sustained winds at 115 mph at its core, still a dangerous Category 3 storm. Erick is now 535 miles SE of Hilo, moving to the west at 14 miles per hour and is expected to stay on this track for the next 48 hours. Erick is expected to weaken further as it draws closer to Hawaii, but its center is expected to stay well south of the Big Island and the main Hawaiian Islands through the weekend.

Moisture associated with Erick will spread over the Hawaiian Islands by Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest raints likely over the east and southeast slopes of the Big Island of Hawaii. Swells generated by Erick will arrive in the Hawaiian Islands over the next couple of days, potentially producing dangerous surf conditions, mainly along east facing shores.

Tropical Storm Flossie: Flossie has weakened back to tropical storm strength as of 11AM, with sustained winds at 70mph. Flossie is now roughly 1875 miles ESE of Hilo and moving to the west at 16 mph and is expected to maintain that speed over the next few days. Although at tropical storm strength now, Flossie is still forecast to regain hurricane status in the next 48 hours. Also of note, the long-term forecast "cone" now includes the eastern tip of the Big Island.
