Paul McCartney Says 'Rocky Raccoon' Was Inspired By A 'Pissed' Doctor

Paul McCartney is gearing up to publish a biography titled The Lyrics: 1956 to The Present, and is getting fans excited with a teaser trailer in which he reveals to comedian Bob Mortimer that The Beatles' 1968 track "Rocky Raccoon" was inspired by a "pissed" doctor he had the misfortune of visiting after getting in a moped accident.

“I was riding on a little moped to see my cousin Betty,” Macca recalled to Mortimer at the British Library. “It was a moonlit night. I said, ‘Wow, look at that moon!’ When I look back, the bicycle is now [on its side] and there’s no way to get it back up. So I’m hitting that pavement.”

The rockstar “smashed [his] lip” and was bleeding a good amount, so his cousin called the doctor.

“I think it was around Christmas time," Macca continued. "Well [the doctor] was pissed. He said, [slurring] ‘I think you need a couple of stitches.’”

When he asked to be given anaesthetic, the doctor said he only had a needle and thread. “And he’s trying to thread the needle but he can’t see it, he's seeing a few needles” McCartney said. “So Betty takes it off him and she threads it.”

The Lyrics is slated to come out on November 2 and can be pre-ordered here. Watch the full story above.
