Seven People Shot At Houston Dance Hall By Single Bullet

A Texas man has been charged with aggravated assault after seven people were shot while at Mercado Sabadomingo, which is a flea market by day and a dance hall by night. Police said that just after 7 p.m. local time, a gun was discharged. The bullet from it went through a man's leg and then ricocheted around the room, striking six other people.

There were hundreds of people at the Houston dance hall, including children, at the time of the shooting. The victims were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Jose Manuel Guerrero-Reyes, told police that the gun was in his pocket when it accidentally went off. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that evidence at the scene contradicts what Reyes told investigators. He said that they were trying to determine exactly what happened and are unsure if Reyes was trying to shoot somebody or if he was just "fumbling" with his pistol. Reyes was drinking at the time.

The first victim said that he did not know Reyes, and police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
