Video Of Officers Putting "Spit Bag" Over 12-Year-Old's Head Sparks Outrage

Police officers in Sacramento, California are coming under fire after a video capturing them putting a spit bag on a 12-year-old boy went viral. A 24-minute video of the April incident showed the young boy resisting as officers tried to detain him. The officers can be seen taking the boy to the ground a placing a mesh "spit bag" over his head because he reportedly spit in the face of the deputies.

The young boy, identified as Isaiah Downs, was attending a carnival with his sister and friends when their adult chaperone asked him to run to his vehicle to grab change. While outside, a security guard approached Isaiah and accused him of stealing from the car.

The security guard also claimed that Isaiah was trespassing and had asked other people to buy him things from a nearby Walgreens.

The young boy's parents claim that the security guard is lying and have demanded an apology from the Sacramento Police Department.

"It shouldn't have happened, it shouldn't have got this far, and I want justice, I want justice for African-American girls and boys," the 12-year-old boy's mother LaToya Downs told KOVR.

Officials have defended the officers, saying that they "followed protocols," but are investigating the details surrounding the incident.

Isaiah was given a citation for battery against a police officer and resisting officers and was released into the custody of his mother.

His mother says they are considering a lawsuit against the department and have retained a lawyer.

"We want to make sure that the greater Sacramento community, the state of California and the world is aware of what happened to this young man, who was doing nothing more than trying to enjoy the benefits of a neighborhood carnival," the family's attorney Mark T. Harris said.
