Chuck Schumer Says Border Wall Funding "Off The Table"

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says his offer of more than $1.6 billion in funds for a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico is now "off the table." According to Politico, Schumer relayed the information to the White House on Monday after the Senate passed a temporary funding bill to re-open the government.

Schumer accused President Trump of walking away from a tentative agreement on a package that included the border wall funding and a renewal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA protected young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children from deportation. Protecting those children, known as Dreamers, was a key factor in the three-day government shutdown that ended late Monday night. The Democrats refused to vote for a bill that funded the government unless it included protections for Dreamers.

To end the shutdown, Schumer got a commitment from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to take up the Dreamers issue soon. Legislators have until March 5th to restore DACA and protect the nearly 800,000 people who have signed up for the program.
